Muscular dystrophies are examples of degenerative myopathic conditions of both dogs and cats. Sarcoglycan deficient muscular dystrophies occur due to dysfunction of sarcoglycan membrane proteins.

Limb girdle muscular dystrophies are a subset of muscular dystrophies that preferentially affect the voluntary muscles of the shoulder and hip in some animals.
Age of Onset: 2-7 months of age
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
Clinical signs worsen over the course of a few months
Clinical Signs:
Behavioral/Mental Awareness
Lethargy

Movement
Exercise intolerance
Short-strided and stiff gait
Thoracic limb abduction


Special Functions (e.g. respiration; urination)
Ptyalism
Dysphagia
Regurgitation
Trismus


Muscle Atrophy
Generalized muscle atrophy
Tongue hypertrophy

Other
Hiatal hernia (maybe associated with weakness of the diaphragm)
Diffuse neuromuscular
Autosomal recessive SGCD (Sarcoglycan) gene mutation
